How knowing your genetic code could lengthen your life
By Adi Gaskell & Matthew Wall Technology of Business, BBC News
A firm called Oxford Nanopore has even developed a hand-held reader that can sequence genetic material in minutes.
Dr Gordon Sanghera, the firm's chief executive, talks about creating "the internet of living things - real time connection of live DNA information" using such portable devices.
A single strand of DNA is one ten-thousandth the width of a human hair, but the hand-held reader, called MinION, squeezes each strand through a tiny hole - the nanopore - and reads its electrical signals. These signals are instantly converted into a DNA sequence.
Within the next 10 years, "everyone will get sequenced at birth", he says, and we'll be able to assess whether we have genetic dispositions to particular diseases and take preventative steps accordingly.
There are great hopes that such genomic data, analysed by artificial intelligence (AI), will help speed up the diagnosis of cancers and lead to more targeted treatments.

The human genome - the full set of genetic instructions for a human being - is made up of 20,000 instructions called genes.
But add all the genes in our microbiome together and the figure comes out between two and 20 million microbial genes.
"What makes us human is the combination of our own DNA, plus the DNA of our gut microbes."
Human cells make up only 43% of the body's total cell count. The rest are microscopic colonists.
This includes bacteria, viruses, fungi and archaea (organisms originally misclassified as bacteria). The greatest concentration of this microscopic life is in the dark murky depths of our oxygen-deprived bowels.
Science is rapidly uncovering the role the microbiome plays in digestion, regulating the immune system, protecting against disease and manufacturing vital vitamins.
The microbiome is also being linked to diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, Parkinson's, whether cancer drugs work and even depression and autism.
Understanding this hidden half of ourselves - our microbiome - is rapidly transforming understanding of diseases from allergy to Parkinson's.

Research Open Evening 12 April 2018 in Edinburgh University at the Anne Rowling Neurology Clinic
Regenerative Neurology – nerve regrowth & nerve deterioration reverse ?
Authors Questions -
1.Regenerative Neurology – nerve regrowth ? nerve deterioration reverse ?
From my research & information gained from media & research sources stem cells are proving to be successful
I will put my money on stem cells
Any specific research being done on this & what progress has been made ?
Edinburgh University aanswer to be added
2. MND, MS & Parkinson’s Disease – related ?
As these are related in neurology perhaps there should be more of a crossover of research for sharing breakthroughs to be used for mutual benefit
Any thoughts ?
eg cancer models, techniques & treatment approaches being used for other medical conditions now
Edinburgh University answer to be added
Stem Cell progress -
MS patient cured using stem cells
Japanese researcher using non – specific stem cells to fool organs where each organ requires specific stem cells for specific organ growth
UK researcher using this stem cells technique to grow new hearts
Edinburgh University answer to be added
3. High Electromagnetic fields Influence ?
We live near high electromagnetic fields & we have people with Cancers. MS, MND, Parkinson’s within a small radius of the source
Any research on this being done ?
We have a professor who we met through MND Association Seminars who would like to do measurements & research on this with us as she believes there is a neurological effect
4. Pneumonia & Flu Virus vaccinations – speeds up MND progress ?
My wife & I had the vaccinations in 2016 & were in a state of panic fighting to breathe afterwards – conclusion virus affects respiratory system
I declined the flu vaccination the second time in 2017 but the doctor gave it to my wife when I was not in the room
Do doctors understand how they might influence MND ?
My wife died with a few days of having the flu vaccination the second time starting with the respiratory system deterioration leading to oxygen deprivation leading the progressive shut down of the body & organ failure leading to pneumonia
Any research done linking MND & vaccinations & viruses ?
or was this just coincidental & to be expected ?
To be investigated by Anne Silk Visiting Fellow Public Health Bournemouth University, Hon DSc, FRSM, FRSA MIofPhysics & Professor Pritchard Studying PSP, MSA & MND. Target May 2018
4. MND fast diagnosis – one to 2 days –
From our experience the diagnosis could have been done in one to two days but the NHS system does not allow this but fast track diagnosis is being introduced for some medical conditions
Any thoughts ?
Fast Tracking ?
New Diagnosis Equipment ?
New Diagnosis systems & procedures ?

New UK Centre for Biomedical Science with top experts in the world working together to make progress to find treatments leading to cures for complicated medical conditions.
This is an oportunity to raise MND awareness to this centre & the world & make real progress to a treatment & cure for MND.
The first of more than 1,200 biomedical scientists have moved into the new £650 million Francis Crick Institute in central London.
It will explore fundamental science questions around diseases like cancer, stroke, infections and neurodegenerative conditions in order to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-37248197
